Subject: public service opportunity

Hello,

I read with interest the groups of recent messages on this list about
using Linux in government and schools. I have another opportunity along
the same lines, and I wonder if anyone might be interested?

I recently got a call from a person who works for the local public
library. They have *very* limited funds-- essentially, none. But they
want to have a good electronic library system. Can you guess where this
is going? :-)

She has been donated a machine and is running Linux. As a non-Linux
person, she is finding everything hard. One example is that the machine
does not have a CD burner and she wants to backup the user name list.

She asked if it is possible that someone may be interested/able to help.
I said that I would be willing to have a look, but it would be uncandid
of me to not admit that while I know things in my little corner I am not
a pro in any sense and something like adding a CD burner would go
outside my knowledge. I said that the public service sense on this list
is strong and possibly there is someone not too far away who knows more
than I do and who may be able to help out a bit.

There is a VT librarian group that is working on this together and she
has been recommended to work with a specific package, so I wonder if it
may just be a question of establishing a running setup (although again,
I am not a pro at this so others are quite likely to know more).

If someone may conceivably be able to help I'd be glad to put you in
touch. I read this list daily but it would be a help if you cc'd any
replies to this to my personal address: jhefferon at smcvt.edu .

Thanks,
Jim
