Dear Jim,
You are quite right.
That said I am afraid that by "scratching an itch" among the lurkers and
the vocals, we may have revealed something we all hold in common beyond
our affection for elegant technology. While generalizing about VAGUERs is
a dangerous precipice, I would say there is the feeling of an approaching
"winter of discontent" that grows among us.
I am both apologetic and proud for creating the current ruckus on this
list. The former feeling, for extending topic beyond our nominal
socialized boundaries I have and continue to beg the list's pardon for,
the later for the simple American tradition which, in an earlier day, was
referred to as a "Committee of Correspondence"
(see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_of_Correspondence).
So, I will conclude this note with just such a risky generalization about
VAGUE list members. By even considering operating systems beyond the
Micro$oft Monopoly, we members of this list cast ourselves into the
darkness of non-conformity. Every member of this list participates more
or less in acts of technical disruption and social disobedience. The
bright light of revolution is revealed to each and every one of us and we
act, talk, read and write (hopefully code :^) in this bright and desperate
dawn.
I try to write code. My code sucks. But somewhere in my breeding,
upbringing or education I found myself living the tradition of a patriotic
American revolutionary (see http://bmarvt.org). I fundamentally believe
that as Americans the revolution that is our province in this universe can
never be over, and it is my privilege to pour the (remaining, expensive)
gasoline on this flame as best I can.
On a related topic, the following individuals who attended the last
meeting have asked me about membership to this list.
- David LaFreniere <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
- Chris Yarger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Can someone prompt me (again :^) as to how we do this?
Finally, it is one of my greatest privileges to participate in this
Committee of Correspondence.
Thank you.
That said, what is this about SSIDS?
Kindest Regards,
Paul Flint

Folks,
I think we are straying quite far from the "Vermont UNIX enthusiasts"
charter, here. We may be VAGUE, but I think most people signed onto this
list to talk about UNIX, Linux, FOSS, and user group meetings. The
(non-FOSS) political discussions are not appropriate for this list, IMHO.
