Thank you all for your help.

I think that I've been able to figure out everything that I was trying to do
with
one, maybe two exceptions:

For both HTTP and SSL if I type in http(s)://
doesnt-exist.twdp.hobby-site.org it
resolves the ip and displays the content of http(s)://twdp.hobby-site.org

If I specify a site for which I don't have a virtual host I want it to
redirect to
an non-ssl 404.

I do want to mention that not all of this I'm doing because it's entirely
piratical.
I've been wanting to play with apache for a long time, but school and work
have gotten in the way of my education such that I haven't had a chance
until
now, since I have a break.

When I'm done playing around the setup that I'll put into effect is that
I'll have a
real https://svn.coolaj86.is-a-geek.net which I'll be using for my school
projects,
a real http://twdp.hobby-site.org that I leave up for the random person
looking
for the freeSSHd tutorial, and a real ajoneal.homeip.net that will list the
contents of a /pub and a real coolaj86.is-a-geek.net homepage that catches
all
other requests.
