Many thanks to all of you for the suggestions and advice that led me to a
solution. It was a great day for learning.
I am now using getmail to download the messages form the GMAVT POP server to
my mailbox on the local server. I installed the dovecot IMAP server and now
my wife and I can share local email from any machine in the house. As
always, I stand on the heads of giants by using a well written how-to by an
expert:

Today: an IMAP Server
Tomorrow: Shared Contacts (probably using LDAP), maybe
