Ruok, what language to focus on depends on what you want to do.

If you want to be able to customize basic Linux things then C and C++ are probably the best choices.

If you want to be able to do IT automation then learn shell scripting, particularly bash, and Perl.

If you need to be able to transform data then Perl and XSLT are valuable.

If you plan to deal with real databases (not junk like Access) then SQL is required.

If you want to make web applications then you have many choices. Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby on Rails are all effective languages for this.

If you want to write things that make Dave happy then English is a good choice. :-)

So, what do you want to do?

Dan

c++, java, vb, asp.net <http://asp.net>, c#, php, postgresSQL, and probably a few others that i have forgot about. My ownly quim is that I don't get to use them as often as I like. I am fresh out of college and got a job doing IT not programming, but in this economy I'm happy to have anything. Even if I don't get to use my sk1llz as often as I would want to. Also to David. I am horrible at english and not dictionary could ever save me. I love the spellcheck, "No suggestions available" message.

        Ello Everyone,
I just joined the mailing list and figured I would say Hi.
         So, Hi,
A little about me. I am a computer user from a young age
installed my first Linux opperating system at about 15 (gentoo
fully working command prompt, did not make it to GUI) I am
currently running a ubuntu server (apache2, vsftpd, sshd),
VMWare ubuntu on my main desktop (it would be windows
on VMWare but games just dont run the same in VMWare or even
wine), and am working on install BT3 on to my eeePC. Oh an I
am working to migrate my computer programming skills from
windows to linux, not sure if I want to learn GTK or QT or
both or what language I want to get started in.
