"Onliners, caught off guard by the shutdown of South Burlington-based
Internet provider Silicon Dairy this week, lost gigabytes of
irreplaceable data.

"Representatives of the business have so far been unavailable to discuss
Monday’s online flatlining. Even their phone lines are dead.

[…]

"The unexpected closure affects a broad spectrum of clients, including
the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), the Church Street
Marketplace, Ronald McDonald House and the Vermont Barter Network.

"Even the lucky few that received advance notice from the company were
not spared an unpleasant surprise."

I don't know that it's exactly relevant given the focus and scope of the
projects, but I'd like to mention <http//www.archiveteam.org/>, if only
to underscore the idea that even if the web service (up in the cloud)
you entrust your precious data to is orders of magnitude larger than
Silicon Dairy (*cough* Lycos *cough* geopages *cough* Yahoo! *cough*) …
it's still at risk.

We need to be both vigilant with our irreplaceable data, and have
contingency plans for our services and online presence.
