Since we're on the topic of backup, that raises the topic of
filesystems...
What does the list have to say about experiences with ZFS, BtrFS, and
(from a cluster POV) GFS, OCFS2?
And for those who don't know (most probably do): Mac OS X has limited
support for ZFS: http://zfs.macosforge.org/trac/wiki
In a related area, and to possibly state the dangerously obvious: If
you want to snapshot your Linux EXTfs, create the filesystem using
LVM (optional: on top of Software RAID).
