(re: Gentoo) The sources/object files are not retained post-install. Headers for dev packages are usually installed, true. I will note the minimal install isos weigh in at just shy of 100MB, and the "stage3" tarball (pre-compiled core system packages that you use to bootstrap your system) weighs in at 131 MB … so you might have some work cut out to get it smaller than that.
