Greetings List Lurkers,

Welcome to your official notice of the Barre Open Systems Institute (BOSI) Adult Swim. The swim stars at 5:00 PM), when we shall continue the agony and ecxtacy of dealing with the all manner of technology, with an emphasis on open source stuff, along with my white hot focus on the Arduino.

The Arduino continues to be the captivating bit of open source hardware and software. As stated in previous missives, we have essentially tossed the Open Wire File system approach to the Dalla 1-wire sensors out in favor of the Chris Yarger method with the Arduino.

The "tsp" site has been updated: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp and will be containing more pictures as the project goes forward. I may ask Chris to do a presentation on this system at the Maker Fair in Burlington (http://www.champlainmakerfaire.com/) on September 29th.

We expect to get some pictures of the latest incarnation of the TSP on the site. The hardware configuration is ***Elegant***. This kicks ass. Again, the pellet furnace, and temperature monitoring projects all seem to converge around this Amtel chip set.

Other ongoing, or maybe not so ongoing... projects that tend to gather here (or hair :^) include:

http://docbox.flint.com:8081/arduino - moving in the arduino groove
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/javajive - to get better at Javascript
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp - Temprature Senors Project
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/furmon - Furnace Monitoring

The snowba money pit...

On the subject of the snowba, beyond $200.00 worth of batteries required for the base of the snowba, I went very nuts and walked into Barre Coins and hobbies, there you can spend money like it was water, and maybe get where you need to go. I found a 300 Amp motor controller for $50.00. Once we get batteries we can test the damn thing. If it will drive the main weels, I will buy the other. As you you arleady know that A "snowba" is a rumba with a snowblower, I am going to continue to bet on global warming for now. As we mentioned before, w have a parted out hi-quad wheelchair with the kind of linear actuators that might do the trick.

Do not miss this instructional video of how to park a lot of money in NC systems to build what you want.

What would be lovely is for a well-healed patron to realize the research potential of the Barre Open Systems Institute and cut us a large check. This benificence could start with the $200.00 for batteries, some MOS or IG FETS, maybe more of the $50.00 motor speed controlers and a snowblower, one with internal caterpillar drive...

...ah, for a well healed sponsor!

Otherwise Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source Software meeting. That said, continue to find our grubby mitts on the Dallas Semi "1-wire" temperature probes, and the Arduino is clearly the coolest thing all year.

Note well that the Barre library stocks "Linux World", the DVD are available as well. Don't reveal your source, I think I have some fines overdue...

Anyway, come and do open source stuff. For more information about the BOSI Adult Swim meeting time and location try this:

Show up at the the Hedding United Methodist Church Basement if you have questions or are interested in Linux or the concept of free and open systems, The basement of the Hedding UMC facility is actually working out pretty well.

If you wish to be included on the "Linux_adult_swim" mailing list, send a response to this note. Note that the mailing list system is a bit peevish right now. Let me know if you have any difficulties.

Kindest Regards,
