I think it is purely a career decision. i had met an armyman long time ago
after Kargil. And i asked him is it really becos they are patriotic...much
more than us that they fight in a battle. Of course, he said, patriotism is
very much there...and that's why they join the army But once there...it is
all about getting our platoon or batallion in the limelight. These people
are cut throat in their competition...sometimes they can even do harm to a
country in a war situation so that they have a name...they can be selfish.
It's not really difficult to fathom. Like my cousin joined as a career move
but the way they are motivated and as Gurkha soldiers their importance and
relevance to the war are created so well...that they feel fighting worth it.
But remember, nobody is willing to die, but they push their luck and cross
limits to get recognition, victoria cross, paramvir chakra.
I can relate with journalists completely. I mean journos from different
countries go to Afghanistan, iRAQ, dangerous places, to get good stories
knowing fully well what risk they are inviting. But they really hope to
survive any attack so that they come back with a great story. They are not
willing to die in the first place.
My thoughts :-)
