Praveen Agarwal Chairman of Mormugoa Port Trust (MPT) announced the building of
a spanking new terminal at MPT which will be used exclusively for handling coal
and coke. The entire terminal will be painted white and be completely covered.
The conveyors will be covered too. Not an inch of the operations will be
exposed
to the wind or the rain.
Agarwal has his own way of checking on precipitation of coal dust in Vasco.
He often goes to St Andrews Church. He goes to examine the white walls of the
churche and for the last two years he has not found a speck of coal dust. This
he said is because MPT has been keeping to the directives of the High Court,
spraying water, covering stacks and paying attention to the height of the
stacks.
The terminal is being developed on a PPP basis, but the common user will be
allowed to use the new facility which will be ready by March 2014. The
Khariwaddo fishing jetty is coming in the way of the new terminal and the work
can only begin once the new fishing jetty is available at Baina.
Mormugao Bachao Abhiyan leader Simon Pereira welcomed the news that the MPT is
following the decision of the High Court and building a new covered terminal
for
the handling of coal and coke. He is not happy about the four years that the
construction of the terminal is going to take however and says that during
these
four years coal transportation through the city must stop.
