A lesson in traffic for Panjim from Chorao
-------------------------------------------------------
After a busy first half of the day in school on Wednesday,
Chorao resident and headmistress of St Bartholomew’s
High School Marcelia Gomes headed to the capital city in
the afternoon to be a part of community service and show
she could make a difference in the society she lived.

Marcelia had no qualms standing opposite the North Goa
Collectorate, here, as a traffic warden reminding motorists to
put on their seat belts as part of Goa Civic & Consumer
Action Network’s (GOACAN) State Road Safety Week
that concluded today.

Besides Marcelia, 74-year-old senior citizen from the island
Edward Abreu was seen manning the traffic during the rush
hours in the morning at the Custom House junction, here,
showing people that at his age one could be of some service.
Edward and Marcelia were amongst the eight traffic wardens
from Chorao who assisted the traffic police in traffic
management today at several busy points in Panjim.

The headmistress and the senior citizen are amongst the
14 volunteers from the island who came together under the
Chorao Civic and Consumer Forum one year ago to enroll
as traffic wardens under the Traffic Warden Scheme of Goa
Police to address the traffic management issues faced by
villagers at its two ferry points.

DySP Traffic North J M Nagvenkar, who closely watched
the traffic wardens manning the city’s traffic, appeared
pleased and had a word of praise for them. “The traffic cell
has a paucity of staff. Just 279 of our personnel are managing
several busy points in six major cities. In Panjim itself there are
20 major junctions. It is certain if responsible citizens from the
city come forward and do their bit by volunteering to be traffic
wardens they will make our work light,” he observed.

GOACAN is convinced that the Traffic Warden Scheme is the
way forward at village and municipal levels looking at Goa’s
ever-rising vehicle figures that have crossed the 7 lakh mark
while the total strength of the traffic police is just 279.

GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martin says he was optimistic
that what is possible in Chorao is a possibility in Panjim.
“Availability of traffic wardens at the local level will be a positive
factor in promoting the Road Safety Patrol (RSP) in schools
besides ensuring traffic education amongst riders, drivers and
pedestrians.”

Martin adds people may ask what is there for them after they
become traffic wardens. “Of course there is nothing, no cash
incentives. Those enrolling for the scheme will only go on to show
they have a heart for their city and its burgeoning traffic problem,”
he mentions.
