Answering your big questions
I mainly use the vassal editor, most others do as well I believe except for some that I know of will also edit the build file Yes I think you are a nut :-) The idea of the repository/different versions can be done by simply renaming your mod and keeping them all - just like the "failsafe", if something goes wrong or you want to change something you always have a backup of what worked previously I don't think you are gaining anything for all that work - quite simply, if it can't be done with the tools provided within the editor, you are not going to be able to do anything new unless you are adding custom classes and code and if that's not the case why bother?
