John, There is some additional information in the FAQ, but I would suggest you just go and have a look at DiceButton.java and start hacking it. It already adds a toolbar button, rolls a dice and writes to the chat window, so it does all the component parts of what you want to do anyway.
The FAQ will also run you through setting up Eclipse and downloading the source.
