Sounds like running out of memory. Assuming the machine has enough RAM, you could try increasing the memory allocation to Vassal. If you use the manual installer, it should give you a method of doing that: <http://www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php? option=com_downloads&Itemid=26> We really need to get an entry about this into the FAQ, though.
