Thanks Rodney. What I ended up doing was removing all trace of VASL and VASSAL off my system. Pref files, directories, cache files, the lot. When I re-installed... same problem!
So I went to the last resort of backing out of Java 1.6 and rolling back to 1.5. Problem fixed.
