There are certainly end-users who appreciate it being cross-platform - 
I'm one who's very vocal about such things in general.

There are *some* users who recognise the benefits of open source (not 
just for VASSAL, but in general).  They don't have to be developers to 
see the value in software that, by investing their time in learning and 
using, they're not shackling themselves to whatever the vision of the 
'primary' developers is.  If Rodney, Joel, Brent et al give up the whole 
thing as a bad idea, are abducted by aliens tomorrow, or just don't 
implement the things I want, even if I'm not a developer I can ask - or 
worst case pay - any other Java-literate developer of my choice to work 
on the code.

Disclaimer: I have coded for a living, I now do so on a much less 
frequent hobbyist basis.  I have never touched a line of code in VASSAL, 
nor written a module for it - but I do enjoy using it.
