Hi Shawn,
Did I mention my abilities(cough!).
I have seen DSNs mentioned, but have never attempted to use them.
Also until recently, I wouldn't have known what a server was. if I was
eating my lunch on top of one.
I'm a bit like Einstein (but with a quarter of his IQ).
Because I lack a server, I have to imagine one in my mind, and then do mind
experiments.
If you had my old worn out mind(64), you wouldn't allow anyone to do
experiments in it..
>I'll bet you're accessing the DB via a mapped UNC path
I don't have a server at home, and have never developed apps to run on them,
before now.
This was how I got around my lack of knowledge of Servers, and file paths
across networks.
Any copy of my pgm has a routine which has to be run at least once before
the pgm will function on any new pc.
It pops up the 'browse for' dialog, and the user is asked to navigate to the
server and double click on a text file called 'Target.txt'
That file is located in the same folder as the DB, on the server.
The resultant path is stored in an INI file on the user's pc.
My program then uses that without ever 'showing me' what it is doing.
I believe it looks something like this -
\\Xpws1\c\SecaJobs\Target.txt (<== OE seems to think that's a link ?)
>From then on my pgm replaces 'Target.txt' with 'DB1.mdb', and uses that
in the connection string.
Is that a UNC path ?
Additionally I have guided a user to paste into Target.txt the path to the
folder where scans go.
This allows the user's to be able to view and move scans(on the server).
But that's not important right now (Flying High)
>Check the log files on the server
Uncharted territory for me, and I rarely visit the client physically, as
they are miles away in the foothills.
I will try to check that out over the phone, and if that does not work, I
will get out of my cave, and visit..
>you can create a DSN **ON THE SERVER**
Well you can, but I don't know if I can ?
But I will give it a try.
>Just set the SERVER param in the connection string to the server's name
Any search words that I should use when 'googling' to understand how to do
that ?
> be setting the connectiontimeout property higher than it is now
Is that a property that my pgms would set each time they connect?
I never maintain a connection for more than a few seconds, and I immediately
disconnect.
So I am gussing that the timeout is either not for that use, or I'm not
understanding where to put it ?.
If I go with Matt's suggestion for running an exe on the server with a
continous connection, Is that where the Timeout thing would come in handy ?
Thanks Shawn,
Rob,
