     I thought about that, and I felt like it was writing the records 
ok...  but I could be wrong.  I am going to re-output the original 
records without EOR characters just in case, and re-write it that 
way.  Also, I am hoping I can get ahold of a tape that already has 
valid data on it to read, the only problem is the BPI could be higher 
and this drive has a fixed BPI and I think it might have some 
problems reading it.  Anyway, thanks for your input and I'll let you 
know what happens.  I got 6 tapes and am going to try writing the 
tapes several different ways hopefully one will work ...

of the records.  Even with variable length records where the record 
length is held in the first bytes it is unusual to have a terminator, 
the records generally follow on directly from each other.  Adding 
these extra two bytes would certainly screw-up the block length and 
is very likely causing your problem.
