Hi everyone,
We have the ability to obfuscate people's e-mail addresses when
posting to the list. By setting this switch, it minimizes spammers
snarfing e-mail addresses.
I certainly hate spam and spammers as much as just about ANYONE out here
on the Internet. This is an interesting approach to dealing with the
problem -- and people with certain service providers can probably
benefit from it. As far as this goes, the tool must be VERY good.
Currently, this setting is not enabled.
Is anyone opposed to me enabling this setting? If so, would you
please clearly state your position.
I have received less than one spam message every 2 or 3 months --
because of my provider having excellent protections in place. So I (as
one individual) will not benefit very much from it.
I have participated in several E-mail lists over the last couple of
years, snd have NEVER been abused or spammed as a result. So I do not
see a need for this switch to be reset. But that does NOT mean that
there is no such need -- it means merely that I have not been faced with
that need.
These things having been said, I must admit that, on a select few
occasions, it has been quite INappropriate to post a reply to the full
list. A directed reply is SOPMETIMES the only appropriate one. That
can be made impossible by such a switch setting as this -- and that
rather subverts the purpose of the list itself!
It is my hope that you can wisely rely upon members of the list taking
responsibility for their own anti-spam measures -- and not be forced
into reducing our abilities to commuicate on-topic and appropriately.
If there's no opposition, I plan on enabling this setting by 2 pm UTC,
March 25, 2010 - 10 am ET.
