I think Alexey's points are valid, and mirror my take on the issue. So, I second Alexey's proposal that e-mail addresses remain as clear text, or that this option is configurable on a per user basis, though I'm not strongly opposed to the change either. I also think that Johannes' questions are valid as well. Having those questions answered may allow for a more informed, and better consensus.
