You just said it. What you did in the virtual media manager is to
attach the cd-rom to the machine, you didn't mount the cd yet. Think
of what you did in the virtual media manager as opening the tray on a
real cd-rom drive, placing a cd inside it, and closing it. This just
puts the cd into the drive, but doesn't mount it. In order to mount
the cd you just inserted, you need to do something like:

mount /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom

I don't use ubuntu here, so this may not be exact, but it should give
you an idea of how to mount the cd inside a text terminal. As far as I
know, cd's should automount in gnome, so your disk may already be
mounted, but I stand to be corrected on that. If none or most of this
doesn't make sense to you, then I'd strongly suggest you become
familiar with GNU/Linux basics before you move on.
