Hello All,

I'm trying to play with my home Linux installation to have it quickly
virtualized to make some testing before implementation of new
features/upgrades/etc.
I'd like to ask for a help with doing P2V migration of a large HDD (let's
say 1TB).
All guides I've found are suggesting performing image/restore of the whole
disk with all its partitions.
However, I only need to migrate my single system partition with Ubuntu which
size is about 40GB (used only 7GB).

Is there any other options how to migrate only needed partition (and
possibly only used space)?

In particular I would be quite happy if you help me with details on the 3rd
step:

1. Boot from LiveCD on a physical host.
2. Install VBox
3. Run migration tools on a needed *partition* to have a resulting .vdi file
on a different partition of the same disk. (An imaginary example might be:
cat /dev/sda | VBoxManage convertfromraw stdin OutPutFile.vdi
<NUMBER_OF_BYTES_MBR+FIRST_
PARTITION_ONLY>)
4. Restart the Host OS and create new VM using the fresh .vdi file.
5. Boot from LiveCD on the VM and fix MBR/GRUB

AFAIK Clonezilla isn't able to make single partition images, however if it
does (like Acronis) it still requires additional recovery step as well as
setup of additional services (e.g. network share to store the image) which
is unnecessary and timely overhead. VMWare Converter is a good tool, but
still I believe it should be done in much more easier way.

Any help is highly appreciated.
Many thanks!

Best regards
Pavel
