I've ended up exporting an vmdk-image from the "local machine"(Windows XP) with VMWare Workstation, shrinked it with the respective VMWare tool and i'm now able to run the resulting vmdk-image under Virtualbox on linux(Google finds plenty of howtos how to do this). Actually this approach works much better and faster and doesn't need as much free space as cloning and converting the whole harddisk(But of course you need a working copy of VMWare Workstation - evaluation copy in my case).
