Running VBox 4.0.2 on desktop & laptop, in both cases with 32-bit
Mandriva PowerPack 2010.2 installed.

For many months I have - when away from home - used a copy of the
desktop's VDI (WinXP-SP3) directory on the laptop's Vbox.
No problems; only the window had to be re-sized to reflect the
different monitor.

On this occasion away from home, when I try to start Vbox, WinXP
fails to start. VBox re-tries several times, then WinXP invites
me to start in one of various safe Modes. (The 'Normal Windows'
mode still fails.)

If I select Safe Mode + Network, I can use my apps; they can
download files and write to USB sticks as usual.
The only problem is that the Window does not fit entirely onto
the screen; I lose some 5% off the RH side and bottom.
('Adjust Window Size' has no effect on that.)

The VDI directory is a copy of the one I was using on the desktop
with no problems.

I tried uninstalling & re-installing VBox, to no avail.

Can anyone suggest why Vbox might fail to start WinXP in this
situation, and how to recover normal behaviour?
