I think using both (mailing list and web access to it) might be the best
solution, and that is exactly what Sun were doing with their lists and I
see it as a very good thing.
I think this list is born after Oracle acquisition and of need to have
separate list independent from Oracle for users, but controlled by
someone else.

I concur that mailing list with actually using the e-mail as
conversation medium is preferred to more educated/serious users but in
real life, one who wants to make a community of users and make
conversations more massive,
needs to also have web interface, because of it's convenience and new
users expectations of actually need for one to be there, by default,
which should be separated from administration issues.

In local community here, for some projects, I have witnessed forming of
local web forums and forced closing of already existing mailing lists.
I found out that those guys putting their community to web, beside wants
of controlling messages and content and putting then under their control
and being more massive with more users, also actually stopped free
speech on their lists by controlling them on web forums.

Classic mailing lists are much more simpler, since there is no
granularity: Esther you are there or not, so people tend to behave better.

I personally prefer USENET NEWS groups with no single authority over
topics and with distributed server infrastructure by default, and much
more open and free approach to making new users feel comfortable and
free and accepted and shaped into a community.
