If  the VM's .vdi is a file stored in e.g. /home/user/.VirtualBox/VDI, 
and /home has plenty of room to spare, why would I *have* to resize the 
/home partition?  (Of course, *if* it was short of space, then I would.)

  (When you say "guest partition", I assume you mean the host partition 
containing the guest VM .vdi files.)

Or am I simply misunderstanding the way you are trying to help us?! :-)
