Dave,
After re-installing the host OS and installing the latest Vbox (+ ext
pack), I saw this error:
*Failed to access the USB subsystem.*
*Could not load the Host USB Proxy Service*
*(VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND). The service might not be*
*installed on the host computer...*
.....for the very first time. It wasn't showing up in either Debian or
Ubuntu before the rebuild, which is why it was so strange that I couldn't
see any USB devices.

Now I can see all of my USB devices, including web cams.
