Thanks Nick! I loaded guest additions with your second method. For some rease 
there is no Devices tab on VboxManager or on the XP window when XP is started. 
I know they used to appear. Loading Guest additions fixed several problems.

One more to go. XP will not work with the windows update site. Says I need SP3 
and .net 2.0 but downloading them and trying to install them runs for several 
hours and still does not complete. I have a 100Mbps Optical link to internet.  
O well thats an MS problem I think
