Guess that settles it, then. Any plans to support Direct3D 5/6/7
eventually? Alternatively - I'm way way out of my depth here - is
there any way to emulate Direct3D 7 using Direct3D 8 APIs?

It'd be nice to have that stated authoritatively somewhere in a place
where Google finds it. I did quite a bit of searching around but
couldn't find anything certain.
