Thanks for your help. No. I didn't copy or clone. This happened all of a sudden 
and for no apparent reason. I booted my host a couple of mornings ago, did some 
light work, then fired up VBox and was confronted with this error.

I can't access the VM at all, not even to edit its configuration. My only 
allowed choice is 'New'.

'Settings', 'Start', and 'Discard' are greyed out. The associated menu choices 
that I usually use to edit a VM configuration (to change memory, mount/unmount 
ISOs, etc.) are greyed out.

If I use 'File' > 'Virtual Media Manager' > 'Optical disks' tab, select each 
ISO shown, and delete them, then shut down VBox, then relaunch VBox and use 
'File' > 'Virtual Media Manager' > 'Optical disks' tab again, the ISOs are 
still there... They can't be deleted.

Done that, many times.
