Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately changing the adapter had no effect. However, another user commented in the bug ticket (https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11610#comment:12) with a possible work-around: disabling VT-x/AMD-V under Settings->System->Acceleration. I can confirm that disabling VT-x/AMD-V works around the problem on my Linux host (Linux 3.9.2, VirtualBox 4.2.12) with 32-bit vms, however it obviously doesn't work for 64-bit vms. Hopefully, this extra information will help narrow down the root cause or suggest a better fix. Thanks again!
