Hi Ulrich.

The magic string you're looking for is "Physical to virtual"  or "P2V"
doing a Google search will let you find many software pieces that do that
kind of conversion, some free, some paid.

One that caught my eye recently, from EaseUS, the makers of the very nice
and namesake Freeware Partition Manager, is "EaseUS Todo Backup".

That product is not freeware, however. But claims to support Win Server
2008.
