AFAIK VBox has ADDED extra container formats (like .VHD, vmdk, etc in addition to vdi), but never dropped support for earlier formats, so you should be fine... In any case, I still recommend you backup/compress your old VM just in case (p7zip works wonders, specially with maximum compression, ie: 7za -mx9 a VMbackup.7z diskname.vdi)... Hope this helps...
