I'm running 2 vms of solaris (openindiana 151_9)

Both were installed from same source and updated to the next version.

Both run the same version of gnome.

They both have the same Vbox settings for 'display'.

Right Click on empty spot of desktop, select 'resolution'.

guest OS-1 shows choices listed like so:

   1440 x 1050
   1280 x 960
   1024 x 768
    800 x 600
    640 x 480

guest OS-2 shows choices listed like so:

   1280 x 1024
   1152 x 864
   1024 x 768
    800 x 600
    640 x 480

And as an PS to above, prior to updating from 151_a8 to 151_9, guest OS-1
showed the top listing as

  15XX x ????

I've forgotten the second size completely and only remember for sure
that it began with 15??.

After the update mentioned ... disp shows as above list indicates.
So, guest OS-1 lost about 100 x of resolution on update.

guest OS-2 has never had above 1280 x 1024

Can anyone explain how I might get a higher resolution on both vms?

My actual video hardware is one of those where mobo memory is shared.
mobo is a clevo W870CU and 'video' is listed as:

Video Adapter ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series (1024 MB)
3D Accelerator ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 (Broadway)
 Monitor AU Optronics B173HW01 V0 [17.3" LCD]

That monitor listing is referencing the screen on the laptop.
An AIDA64 Report on that machine shows this for display:

 Display:
Video Adapter ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series (1024 MB)
Video Adapter ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series (1024 MB)
3D Accelerator ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 (Broadway)
     Monitor Asus VW266H [26" LCD] (A8LMTF018746)
     Monitor AU Optronics B173HW01 V0 [17.3" LCD]

The Asus mentioned there has a native res of 1920 x 1280 (I may have
some digits wrong on the second number..but very close)
