It turned out, that no I hadn't and, of course, that sort of solved
the problem.

I had it in my mind that the guest additions were installed... but
they were not.

However, there is still some things I don't understand.

I got to thinking more about this when I discovered my mistake and
remembered that a while back, when it was the previous version of
vbox. One of those same installs, the oldest one. Had originally had a
screen res of something in the 1500 range... I don't recall exactly
but know for certain that it was between 1500 & 1600 on the high end
of the setting ... don't recall the low end now.

The point is, it was even higher than the current 1440 x ????

So there must be ways to manipulate that setting.  If one version of
addons can show a different high end  from the next...  There must be
something doing it.  Maybe the video driver?  Is that included in
addons? 

Is it possible to manipulate those settings simply by adjusting
xorg.conf?

I will experiment but first will have to dig in enough to get a good
idea of what is to be adjusted and even if xorg.conf is even respected
anymore.
