I'll admit I was a bit confused by your question about placing the
vdi. When I create a guest under vbox 4.2.x, I am given the option
where the vdi should be placed before it is created. I would be
surprised if this feature went away in 5.x.

Ok, that makes sense. I too have a single separate partition behind
windows for things I don't want to keep with the OS.

Yes. I too remember when I got my first 1 GB disk thinking that I
would probably never fill it. Now I'm running out of space on drives
with 500-2,000 times that; but this is getting off topic.

If you don't mind your guest settings being stored in the same place
as the vdi files, you can put the vdi files where you want.
