I have seen many related posts and tickets about problems if 3D accel is on,
especially (or only?) with (64bit?) Linux guests. However, most either
don't provide a solution, or it hasn't worked for me.

I currently have a Gentoo Linux host, kernel 4.1.15. Virtualbox 5.0.16, with
the guest additions from the download page 5.0.17-106140. The host is
KUbuntu 15.10 with kernel 4.2.0 and xorg 1.17.2. I have had various of the
guest systems virtual box packages installed. None are currently installed,
but it does not seem to have made any difference. I see no errors in the
virtualbox additions install logs on the guest.

When I start the guest, the login screen looks fine, and when I log in, the
guest initially looks fine, with two applications visible and with icons on
the lower panel. However, once I try to do anything, the app windows just
disappear, as does the panel. If I hover the mouse over the panel, I can
generally click, but only the task launcher seems to work, and even there,
once I launch an application, it disappears. Alt-tab does show the icons,
and I can circle through them, but no matter where I stop, I never get any
application window visible.

The only way I have gotten any information is to ssh in from a terminal on
the host. The most relevant line I see from the X log is "(EE) Failed to
load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)"

If I turn off 3D accel, everything seems to work fine.

My host video is "NVIDIA GPU Quadro FX 1700 (G84GL)" using nvidia-drivers
340.96.

What other info should I post, or what else can I do to troubleshoot?

Jack
