Thank you Frank -- that's it. Arch is now on the 5.5 kernel, and it seems the package changes to a number of packages to support that kernel bring Virtualbox to its knees. The description of NIC interface not created/times out, early filesystem use in boot cannot be flushed to persistent sources, and udevd failing to start is just a way of describing "It all goes to hell in a handbasket" with the 5.5 kernel! -- David C.
