Hello everybody,

thank you for providing this list and contributing to it. Here I go
with the question I subscribed for:

Why do some Linux VMs sometimes not boot up?

Background info:

I have a few VMs running here to provide a couple of services we need.
Three of them are running Debian 10 installations. The machine it's
running on is Debian 10 as well. Virtualbox is V. 6.1.22 r144080, but
the same issue already existed under a previous version.

Now all virtual machines are setup as individual services, shutting
them down via sending acpipowerbutton (and a 4 minutes wait to give
them time to shutdown) for a full backup of the host server. They seem
to shutdown just fine (at least whenever I observe them), but every
once in a while, and increasingly more often, they do not start up
again (They are not triggered to start all at once, but again with a
delay of a couple of minutes, iirc.). It's never more than one machine
at a time that gets stuck at a black screen with a single white
blinking underscore cursor. They still respond to commands like the
acpipowerbutton again, or sending Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot, and then they
start up just fine.

Another attempt to solve the mystery was: I browsed the log files - it
got stuck right after

[timestamp] OHCI: Software reset

The next log item in a clean boot would be

[timestamp] OHCI: USB reset

But that didn't happen in the stuck state.

So I set the pointing device to PS/2 mouse and disabled USB entirely.
After a few days, we got the next machine frozen on boot, last night
another. This time the log file didn't state anything. In fact, there was no
log. It just looked (from the files) like there hadn't been a boot at all.
Though the symptoms - black, blinking white cursor top left - remained the same.

Does anyone have an idea what causes them not to perform a clean boot?
Any help appreciated. Some solution attempts might have to wait a bit
though, because all of that are under productive use during normal
German working hours.

Thanks for your help. TC, Martin
