Glenn,

Do you (the user that starts vbox) have permissions rw permissions on the 
shared folder directories on the host?  I have been using them from day 1 
without issues.  The guest is vanilla XP, no SP or updates.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but I had already setup a samba share for 
the directories I setup as shared folders.

You can also share a USB drive or stick.  Just cannot see it in the host and 
guest at the same time (same for CDs).
