Hello Nigel,

It's not quite clear to me what you are wanting to do there.  Basically, 
if all you want is for your VMs to be able to access the network, then 
NAT is probably the way to go.  You can just set up the VM to use NAT 
and nothing else should be required.

You will be wanting to set up host networking if you need to run servers 
on the VMs - in that case you would probably be best studying the 
networking chapters in the manual a bit, but it is not overly complex.

If you are just wanting to do scp and things, you are probably best 
setting up your ssh server on the host and using NAT on the guest.
