It seems to me, I have a similar problem.
Host - 2.6 Linux
Guest - WinXP SP2
I connect my mobile phone Siemens to computer by USB-cord (in Windows used 
driver USB to COM).
After that I can work with files in phone (OBEX), but I can not to read/write 
firmware flash....
