Do you have write access to USBfs? The permissions are handled in a
rather unusual way, they are set for all USB devices at once, not for
individual ones. See the troubleshooting section of the manual (Linux
hosts, USB not working) which unfortunately needs updating but may still
help you a bit.
Note that what you have to do depends very much on which Linux
distribution you are using.
