I have the same problem as you Zed. Though still have to find the solution out 
going through the instruction manual, you can save your data in your host 
system desktop through shared files installing guest additions first.

Recognition of USB ports (mass storage and printer, for instance) can be also 
matter of usb file system permissions  in the host system. Actually, I need 
to solve that as can not  use my inkjet printer. My Windows2000 virtual box 
can't either recognise graphics card (Radeon 955). 

I let you know when have the solution.
