Is this problem reproducible?  If so, perhaps you could check the error
message and post that, as it is hard to guess what might be going wrong
from your description.

Do you mean make the drive visible to the guest?  If so, you must set up
a USB filter in VirtualBox
 (see the user manual) describing the device and make sure that
VirtualBox has read-write access to usbfs on your host.  Note as well
that USB is only supported in the non-OSE version of VirtualBox, i.e.
the version you can download from virtualbox.org.
