I am setting up a virtual machine for use by students. I would prefer it
if only their removable USB devices, and not permanently attached ones
such as the mouse and keyboard, were visible to them. Is it possible
using filters? It seems as if it should be, but I can't make any sense
of them. No matter what I do, every device is always present in the
guest.
The help says:
...you can determine in detail which devices are available. For
this, you must create so-called "filters" by specifying certain
properties of the USB device.
The more criteria you specify, the more precisely devices will
be selected. For instance, if you specify only a vendor ID of
046d, all devices produced by Logitech will be available to the
guest. If you fill in all fields, on the other hand, the filter
will only apply to a particular device model from a particular
vendor, and not even to other devices of the same type with a
different revision and serial number.
So, if I create a filter for the keyboard, say, and add a fictitious
serial number, should that not prevent that device from appearing in the
guest since the last part of the above quote should apply?
As it doesn't, what am I misunderstanding?
