I've actually discovered it was due to the fact I was running VirtualBox over 
an X11 connection through a local SSH tunnel.

  Check you added your user to the vboxusers (log in and out) group and that 
the 
  vbox modules loaded correctly. (/etc/init.d/vboxdrv start)
