(newbie alert:  the first in what is almost assuredly a number of
beginner-level questions.)

  regarding the possible virtual disk formats, AIUI, virtualbox has
its own native format (VDI), and it is also capable of working with
VMDK format images (vmware native format, right?).

  i note as well that microsoft has its own format -- VHD -- but it
doesn't appear that vbox can handle that.  is all that about right?

p.s.  i recall reading somewhere that it is possible to convert a VHD
image to VMDK as well.
