Right, VDI is currently the preferred format, as it's the only format 
which allows you to do snapshots etc.

VMDK can be read and written, but there's no snapshot support.

VHD is in the works now that the format specification is open.

There are lots of changes pending in the virtual disk area. So stay 
tuned. Soon it'll be relatively simple to integrate arbitrary image 
formats and convert them without much trouble.

Currently the best bet for conversion is using the qemu-img command line 
tool (source should be pretty obvious from the name). It can't 
read/write VDI files, but converting to VDI (from raw image) is doable 
with "VBoxManage convertdd". As mentioned above, this isn't the last 
word in this area.
